The overall goal of Step Ahead is to provide quality outpatient substance abuse treatment and education for persons seeking to overcome and recover from drug and alcohol problems.  In addition, Step Ahead provides supportive counseling services to Veterans and their families.

Our Programs and Services Include:

Co-Occurring Disorders Counseling for Adults:

  • Step Ahead offers substance abuse education sessions for adolescents addressing topics such as: the consequences of adolescent alcohol, marijuana and over-the-counter medication abuse as well as strategies to improve decision-making and deal with peer pressure around the use of substances.

Counseling Services for Veterans and their Families:

  • Step Ahead's counselors have years of experience working with military members and their families, collaborating with other veteran programs in the area to meet all of your needs.
  • Services for veterans and their families focus particular on those suffering from Trauma, PTSD and/or Substance Abuse. 
  • Step Ahead provides individual, family and multi-family counseling services and offers educational classes and support groups.
  • Educational Class Topics Include: Effective Communication, Coping with Anger and Anxiety, Assertiveness Training and Stress Management.

Substance Abuse Counseling for Adults:

  • Step Ahead offers treatment plans for adults who are experiencing a variety of substance abuse problems. Groups cover substance abuse education and relapse prevention skills.
  • Step Ahead offers a Maryland State Certified DUI/DWI program for clients in need.

Substance Abuse Education for Adolescents:

  • Step Ahead offers substance abuse education sessions for adolescents addressing topics such as: the consequences of adolescent alcohol, marijuana and over-the-counter medication abuse as well as strategies to improve decision-making and deal with peer pressure around the use of substances.

Substance Abuse Counseling for Adolescents:

  • Step Ahead offers substance abuse counseling for adolescents beginning with an individual’s assessment which includes the family. Treatment is primarily delivered through group sessions. In addition, the program involves individual family review sessions and twice weekly urinalysis and/or breathalyzer testing.

What will it cost?

  • Cost varies based on individual consumer needs as well as the length of treatment.
  • Insurances taken are medical assistance, some private insurance plans. Some consumers are eligible for Montgomery County funds to cover treatment. Self-payments plans are also available.

Who can be a part of this program and for how long?

  • Persons eligible are adolescents ages 13-18 and adults who meet criteria for outpatient substance abuse treatment and/or education.
  • Typical courses of treatment range from 90 days to 6 months; depending on individualized assessment.
