Our Philosophy

At the Family Discovery Center, we promote literacy and healthy child development programming for families with children ages six weeks through three years old. Our programs allow families to become proficient in the English language while also preparing their children to be successful in school.  We provide programs both at our Center and in the home, ensuring that we reach families where they feel most comfortable. Part of the Maryland Family Network, we serve the entire family, providing comprehensive services to promote self-sufficiency. Our goal is to empower our parents to be teachers and role models for their children and create a lifelong love of learning for generations to come.

Learning Together

At the Family Discovery Center, we take care in ensuring that the entire family learns together in a supportive environment. Our curriculum is collaborative so that the family can discuss what they have learned when they are at home together. If the parents are learning about housing opportunities, their preschool-aged children may build houses with blocks (working on math skills and motor development)  or furnish a doll house using the same vocabulary their parents are learning in class. The families may venture into the community the following day to learn how to furnish a room on a budget by visiting a furniture store allowing an opportunity to use the vocabulary they learned in class in a real-world setting as well as practice simple phrases such as “I need a couch.”
