Community Celebrates Official Opening of Adolescent Recovery Clubhouse in Gaithersburg, Maryland

Date: Jun 14, 2013

(Gaithersburg, MD) -- Local, regional and state officials, behavioral health professionals, community leaders and advocates for substance abuse prevention and rehabilitation gathered together on Monday, June 10, 2013 to celebrate the ribbon cutting ceremony for The Landing - Adolescent Recovery Clubhouse located in Gaithersburg, MD.

A program of Family Services, Inc. (FSI), The Landing is an important addition to the county's system of care for substance-abusing youth. With support and assistance from Montgomery County and the State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, Family Services has developed this recovery clubhouse intervention program for youth ages 12-17 who are enrolled or have completed a substance abuse treatment program.

"The aim of The Landing is to improve the peer support network for youth in recovery and allow youth discharged from treatment to improve their chances of staying in recovery longer," stated Monica Davalos, Care Coordinator for The Landing. "Youth have many other places where they hear valuable advice from adults, but this is really a unique chance for them to be a resource to other youth and lead themselves in a positive way through the recovery process."

Designed to provide a safe and supportive place that adolescents can call their own, The Landing offers positive youth development activities (age and developmental stage appropriate) in a nonthreatening environment. The adolescent clubhouse model has been recognized as a "best practice" with adolescents who present a substance use disorder (SUD) and other co-occurring disorders.

Located at 630 East Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD 20877, the program operates Tuesdays - Fridays from 3pm - 8pm and Saturdays from 12:00pm-6:00pm.
