Date: Apr 14, 2011

(Gaithersburg, MD) – The Bank of America Charitable Foundation provided a grant of $15,000 to Family Services, Inc. for the Health Families Montgomery (HFM) program. HFM is a home-based early intervention program to promote healthy childhood development and school readiness, positive parent child interaction, and enhanced family functioning in overburdened families.

Joseph Petitto, Consumer Market Executive for the Montgomery County area presented the donation to Thom Harr, Executive Director of Family Services at the Bank of America branch located in Gaithersburg, MD. The Bank of America Charitable Foundation is dedicated to providing opportunities and improving the quality of life in our communities. The Foundation has shown a strong commitment to early childhood services, having previously supported Family Services with the Help Me Learn and the Healthy Families programs for vulnerable families.

HFM is a nationally accredited, voluntary home visiting program serving approximately 140 first time parents each year. Participating families are screened for multiple stressors such as mental health or substance abuse concerns, limited self-sufficiency, and the experience of abuse or neglect as a child. Home-based services begin before birth and continue on a weekly basis for at least six months. Families continue to receive services for up to five years, depending on the nature and severity of their issues. Emphasis is placed on health care, child development and school readiness, parenting education and support, and family self-sufficiency.
